Everything you need to know, at a glance
A quick, honest breakdown of what an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate actually is, when you need one, and what it covers — no jargon.
When You Need One
- Selling or transferring a used vehicle (private sale)
- Registering an out-of-province or out-of-country vehicle
- Registering a rebuilt or salvage vehicle
- Changing a vehicle's status from unfit to fit
What Gets Inspected
- Brakes, steering & suspension
- Tires, wheels & body structure
- Lamps, instruments & electrical
- Windshield, mirrors, fuel & occupant protection
How Long It Lasts
Your certificate is valid for 36 days from the issue date — plan your ownership transfer or plate registration to fall within that window.
What It Doesn't Cover
A safety certificate isn't a warranty. It confirms your vehicle met Ontario's minimum safety standards on the day it was inspected — nothing more, nothing less. That's why we're always upfront about what we find.
Every inspection follows Ontario's Passenger/Light-Duty Vehicle Inspection Standard, performed by MTO-certified technicians right here in North York.

Frequently Asked Questions
A few quick answers before you book — or browse the full list any time.
What's the difference between a Digital and Full Inspection?
A Digital Inspection is a quicker, more affordable check, while a Full Inspection is a more comprehensive review of your vehicle. Our team can help you decide which is right for your situation.
Do I need a safety inspection to sell my car in Ontario?
A valid Safety Standards Certificate is generally required to transfer ownership of a used vehicle in Ontario, with some exceptions. Give us a call at (905) 609-2228 and we'll walk you through what's needed.
What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?
We'll give you a clear, honest write-up of exactly what needs fixing and why, so you can decide how you'd like to proceed. Many repairs can be completed on the spot.
Is a safety certificate the same as a warranty?
No. A Safety Standards Certificate confirms your vehicle met the required Ontario safety standard at the time of inspection only — it isn't a guarantee of future mechanical condition or reliability.
