Step 1: Stay Calm and Find a Safe Location

Step 5: Raise the Vehicle

Locate the correct jacking point on your vehicle's frame (consult your owner's manual to avoid damaging your car's rocker panels). Position the jack securely underneath the lifting point, then slowly raise the vehicle until the flat tire is approximately 4–6 inches off the ground. Never crawl underneath a vehicle supported only by a portable jack.

Step 6: Remove the Flat Tire

Now that the tire is safely suspended, finish removing all the loose lug nuts. Place them together somewhere safe like inside your hubcap. Pull the tire straight toward you off the wheel studs. If the tire feels stuck due to rust or corrosion, gently rock it back and forth until it pops free.

Step 7: Install the Spare Tire

Line up the wheel studs with the mounting holes on your spare tire, then slide the spare onto the hub. Hand-tighten each lug nut clockwise until snug. Do not attempt to fully torque or tighten them with your wrench while the vehicle is still raised on the jack.

Step 8: Lower the Vehicle & Tighten

Carefully lower the vehicle using the jack until the new tire touches the ground and carries some weight, but don't lower it all the way down yet. Tighten the lug nuts with the wrench using a star pattern. Tightening in a star pattern ensures even pressure and keeps the wheel properly centered on the hub. Once tightened, lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack.

Step 9: Double-Check Everything

Before driving away, verify every lug nut is fully tightened once more. Put away your jack and wrench, secure the damaged flat tire in your trunk, and check your spare tire's pressure. If you are using a temporary spare ("donut"), remember that they are designed for short distances only. Most temporary spare tires should not be driven above 80 km/h and should be replaced with a full-size tire as soon as possible.
